The " A " side of this single is not the Del Shannon song with the same title. It is a mediocre effort , with rather twee lyrics and a weak vocal from Conrad. The flip side , " Twist My Wrist " , is much better. It is a very catchy number , with a good twist beat and a slick arrangement , and Conrad is better vocally on this side. Perhaps the record would have fared better if this had been the top side. Finally , I understand that Jess Conrad is still actively involved in the music business and the theatre.
This single comprises two catchy mid-tempo tracks , which are enhanced by sparkling arrangements by Johnny Keating. " You Can Do It If You Try " is a better , more interesting song than the top side. It was penned by Johnny Worth ( a.k.a. Les Vandyke ) , who has provided hits for many artists including Adam Faith , and it was also recorded by Peter Gordeno , 'though I prefer Conrad's lilting take on it. Jess Conrad isn't a great singer , but he gets by on lightweight material like this. This single stalled at no.50 in the U.K. , where his biggest hit was " Mystery Girl " ( no. 18 , in January 1961 ). Finally , I understand that Jess Conrad is still actively involved in the music business and the theatre.
