I'm guessing this has already been suggested many times, but what do you think about a genre field? Admittedly, much of it would be subjective, as one man's rock 'n' roll is another man's garage...

We thought about this and decided against it.

One of the main reasons being exactly what you've pointed out!

The compilations feature and the (coming very soon) Lists feature will provide something along these lines as members will be able to make lists like...

1. Top 100 UK Psych 45s
2. Top 30 Proto-Metal bands.
3. Top 50 Country songs.

etc. etc.

I tend to agree with the Doc - it's too subjective and at the end of the day I'm
not sure how useful it would be - would anybody really want to see listings
of all the soul, country, garage records ?

What I think would be useful is adding "country", "folk", "instrumental" or
whatever in the notes field when you're dealing with really obscure one shot
artists. That way you'd at least have some idea of the style of the record.
The description in the notes can be as detailed as you want it to be - "guitar led instrumental", "deep soul", "frat rocker" ... whatever fits.

Wouldn't genres get confusing with different music styles on A and B sides?..John

Yes indeed. Davie's suggestion is the way to go.

Comments like Surf instrumental A-side, Polka B-side etc. etc.

Ditto.

The Toad's comments have certainly saved me a few quid!
