2012 sees the 60th anniversary of the first ever UK singles chart

This should be ideal opportunity for all the 45catters. (But someones done pre-selecting list )

http://www.itv.com/nationsfavouritenumberone/

Of course the records that sold and noted as number one ( on the BBC record chart ? - ITV Quote Daily Mirror that I think was the same source for much of the chart compliations ) are not necessarily the best singles ever released , so how about Topic for your choice of the best record NOT to get to Number One ( But Charted in Top 40 ) and the Best Record released and not to chart.

Best record not to get to number one is easy - Fairytale Of New York. Purely my opinion and hugley biased given I'm a huge Pogues fan but there you go!

This could run and run...

Can I be the first to suggest Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane?

Thank you

Top single not to get #1: Gallows Pole - Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.
Worst single that did get #1: House Of The Rising Sun - Animals.

I deliberately left off worst number 1 for this topic as far too many - but I will allow disagreements with any of the ITV list.

With bad records there is an amount of satisfaction in physically trashing them , a feeling you dont get with deleting a download, and sometimes a passable B side can redeem a trashworthy A side (though thats another thread thought for a different time)

Thanks Bill, something to do with the way BBC recorded sales returns on Double A sides, so that week or so's number one -Engelbert Humperdinck's "Release Me" ( a truly dreadful tune in my opinion , wonder what happened to the singer ? )

I presume that last comment was made tongue in cheek! He is of course our Great White Hope.

For me, the best single not to get to No. 1 is "Mr. Brightside" by the Killers (although "Party fears two" by the Associates is a close second) and the best non-top 40 is "Song to the siren" cover version by This Mortal Coil (UK No. 66). All purely subjective of course.

Totally agree!

Also I would like to suggest Vienna by Ultravox and Blue Monday by New Order.

Regarding the second part of that I'm glad it's not just me.When I first heard House Of The Rising Sun I thought 'that's not singing, that's just bawling', a view I've never had occasion to revise.

I'm sure most of us could rattle off a dozen personal favourites that we reckon should have hit #1 but went nowhere in the charts. Of releases that deserved to but just fell short, my vote definitely goes to Pulp's "Common People" -- best song of the 1990s, kept off #1 by bleeding Robson and Jerome!!
