If I have been listening I have been down ranking a few songs , not because they
are intrinsically bad , but an lyric that rhymes 'Arms' with 'Charms' will not get more than a 3 or 4, sorry.

Anyone else got any pet rhyming hates ( or degrees of excellence for superior wordsmiths ? )

'School' and 'fool' springs to mind, though to be fair the options are limited.

Not so much rhyming hates, but I've always thought the phrases
"it's all right", "it's gonna be all right", "everything's all right" etc.
always sounded like an easy way out for putting something on a "B" side.

On the other hand, who am I to criticise. I've never written a song in my life.

Earliest example I ever came across was:

But then I don't really mind:

Anything recorded after 1979 that refers to a lady as "babe" in the lyrics is a bit of an irk for me.

And, as an odd one, I loathed Babybird's "You're Gorgeous", not just because it's crap, but because the word "gorgeous" sounds utterly ridiculous.

Maybe it's just me :-)

Mmm, just what is wrong with arms/charms anyway? Sounds good to me
You could also look at RCA 1152

Whether cliched rhymes work can depend on who is doing it.'Have you ever been on an island of love/in love with somebody sent down from above' is dreadful in principle but when sung by Felix Cavaliere it comes off beautifully.

I think it was Robyn Hitchcock who came up with the brain defying:

On Brenda's iron sledge
You can call me Reg
Cos that's my name.

"Stay" and "away", "you" and "true" strike a chord with me...

The one that gets on my nerves is Ten Years After:

Life is funny
Skies are sunny
Bees make honey

Really? I think they should have done an opinion on money instead of getting lazy and just throwing in "Bees make honey" in order to have a third rhyme.

The Loved Ones' "Being Here With You" could have been a bit more inspired...

"Many hours we've spent alone
I remember well
But what the hell
I love you"

Really, guys? :sideways:

Although I wrote a song once that rhymed Morning with Yawning, I strongly disapprove of anyone else doing so. Unless they're writing I'm Only Sleeping, obviously.

It goes:

Please don't call me Reg,
It's not my name.

Same song contains many strange couplets, such as:

The grasshoppers curl up and burst
As Brenda shovels on the wurst

Me too. Amazing body of songs, going right back to the 70s. There's really no-one else like him.

I once saw him play on an open-top bus ride, on the Isle of White coast. He'd spot a nice place to pull the bus over, and everyone would pile out to listen to him play a few songs, then back on the bus until the next suitable stopping place was found. A photo from that day later appeared in one of his CDs, and I'm right there in the shot. My proudest moment!

I wonder if Lenny got his Mum to help with these lyrics?
"I wish that I could fly
Into the sky
So very high
Just like a dragonfly"
