I entered a couple of records [Jon Hamilton/ Aretha Franklin] yesterday which in all details except the label name &/or cat & country was identical to an existing release. So I am wondering is it possible for a 'button' whereby we could copy an existing entry as "x" [2] and then go in an edit the differences? It could save a lot of time entering near duplicate records.
Currently I find it easier to open 2 browser windows side by side and clip copy all the information I need from one to the other instead of typing.

Probably not a good idea as it could encourage lazyness in adding entries. For one thing, it's the rule here to enter details exactly as on the label, and details often differ between different releases. Worse, say for example someone has correctly entered a track with composer credit 'Anthony' then someone adds a record which shows whether it is Mark, Michael, Ray, or Troy Anthony; that important detail would be lost if they were just to 'copy' it in. Anyway, do you often need to do this?

Our programmer is on holiday this week so it's best to wait till he comes back and give this subject a bump.

My gut feeling is that it's usefulness isn't enough to justify the coding and design changes needed (Which could cause confusion) - ultimatey though it's Orbiting Cat's shout as he'd have to do the coding and design!

OKdokey. As Jules has spotted I'm a very lazy person! Using a dual browser system certainly saves time for me so maybe I will stick with that. I've uploaded about 700 entries I reckon at least a quarter were releases that were analogous to a different country of origin. It doesn't matter, as this is a slow long term hobby/ project for me no rush.

I suggested this previously somewhere. I don't think it is being lazy , it is using the time saving power of computing to pre-populate data fields, they need to remain editable until the final submit of course where such differences of name spelling , abbreviation etc occur.

If we knew the underlying format of the database we could also provide flat files to populate from our own excel and other database lists ( I have some old 8086PC programmes for cateloging Albums and Videos for example ) , and good old MS media player versions used to allow one to fill in information.

Of course the normal field separators in computer databases are normally , or " both of which crop up in record titles so like other databases I assume specific field begin field end characters are used in 45cat.

It really doesn't take THAT long to type the details in for your average 45...

...and failing that, for the truly needy, the twin window/twin tab copy and paste technique is surely quite sufficient.

EDIT: I was also going to say, half the pleasure is manually entering a new record, just importing an Excel file would be no fun at all!

It's a good idea, but I don't think the cost of implementing it would be worth it for the number of times it would be used. The TODO list for 45cat is still very long!

The paste in technic have been used at Discogs for several years, but many people don't correct the full item to their own (a nice job to be a mod will arise), so I don't think it's a good idea.
Thanks.

Thanks.

It probably makes more sense on discogs too as they do all formats.
