The Angelettes - Don't Let Him Touch You / Rainy Day - Decca - UK - FR 13284     Comment by My Friend Jack

3rd Jan 2010

… day but everything is OK, I'm putting on my coat, gonna meet JK." I quite like the A-side, actually, although that's really down to the Johnny Arthey arrangement.

Bob And Marcia - Young, Gifted And Black / Young, Gifted And Black (Instrumental) - Harry J - UK - HJ 6605     Comment by My Friend Jack

23rd Dec 2010

The version without the strings was recorded in Jamaica, I believe. The strings were added by Johnny Arthey in the UK to make the record more palatable to British record-buyers. I wasn't aware of the Escort release, no idea when it came…

The Polka Dots - Run Run Senorita / The Costa Brava - Philips - UK - BF 1247     Comment by sixtiesmusicfanatic

27th Apr 2014

… Wanderers but never a hit for anyone. The Polka Dots' excellent harmonies are supported to good effect by a scintillating arrangement from Johnny Arthey. I have always thought of the Polka Dots as a " square " old - fashioned vocal group , but on this number they sound…

Me And You [Reggae] - You Never Know What You've Got / Got Again - Laser - UK - LAS 8     Comment by groovemaster.dj

… releases. (It brings in mind the under-dub early version of Young Gifted and Black that the Palmer brothers leased and put out on Escort before Johnny Arthey did his magic and added the hit making elements for the Trojan/Harry J re-release)

Clodagh Rodgers - Come Back And Shake Me / I Am A Fantasy - RCA - UK - RCA 1792     Comment by Klepsie

Here's a contender for most hair-splitting label variant: this A side has "Arranged by Johnny Arthey" whereas the other stock copy scan says "Arranged By Johnny Arthey" with a capital B! No other difference (that I can see...)

I've always assumed the vocal is by Johnny Arthey. Does anyone out there know?

Typo alert: the arranger is Johnny Arthey. (Youtube Video)

It does sound as though King should be involved in this classic, but according to the label credits it was produced by Johnny Arthey & Phillip Swern, who also wrote the b side. It's arranged and conducted by Johnny Arthey, and there is no mention of King on the label.

Blue Haze - You'll Never Walk Alone / Take Away My Heart Teresa - A&M - UK - AMS 7056     Comment by Malice-Cooper

16th Jan 2013

There was no band. Blue Haze were a duo, the producers Phil Swern and Johnny Arthey. The only photo I have seen is on the Ronco "20 Star Tracks" Album cover which has 20 photos on the front and Blue Haze clearly were the producers.

… different band 3) I suspect the 1960s US release is as well 4) The Dutch release on Negram may be yet another one. Probably a UK recording since Johnny Arthey was involved (there's apparently a UK Emidisc acetate of one side known).
