Atlantic has the "℗" on this record, so it must have been released after 15 February. Can somebody elucidate finely what the date was?
And my condolences to Roberta's cat. A cat dying breaks me up as well.

The Kingston Trio did it before Joe & Eddie did, on their "New Frontier" LP from late 1962.

There is a lot of history behind this song ..

In 1969 Roberta Flack brought out the album "first take", on that album she sang this song.

It's a song written by Ewan MacCall (Father of Kirsty MacCall) who had a afaire with female folksanger Peggy Seeger while still married to his wife Jean Newlove.
Ewan wrote "The First Time ..." when Peggy asked for it to use in a musical and learned the lyrics by phone.

The first artists that took the lyrics to Vinyl were Gospelduo "Joe and Eddie" they released the song on their album Coast to Coast in 1964.

Folktrio Peter, Paul and Mary recorded their version in 1965.
Peter Yerrow explained what the song was about ...

" We like to sing a song that was written by a traditional singer from Scotland. His name is Ewan MacColl and he is married to a relative of Pete Seeger, the greatest American folksinger, I think. The song is about the first time they met and fell in love. It’s called ‘The First Time’."

Ewan however didn't make a secret about his thoughts that other people covered on of his best songs .. Here is what he said about that ..

"He hated all of them. He had a special section in his record collection for them, entitled ‘The Chamber of Horrors’. He said that the Elvis version was like Romeo at the bottom of the Post Office Tower singing up to Juliet. And the other versions, he thought, were travesties: bludgeoning, histrionic and lacking in grace."

So how did Roberta got connected to this song ?

In the late 60's before she went on touring someone gave here a black cat she named "Sancho Panza" it was her one and only pet and during one of her tourings the cat passed away .. the song "The fist time .." she dedicated to her cat.

In 1971 Clint Eastwood heard the song from her first album "First Take" and asked her if he could use it for his first production movie "Play Misty For Me"
Roberta agreed and the Movie was such a big hit that fans rushed to the record shops in order to get a copy of Roberta's "The First Time .. "

Well folks .. The rest is history ...
