As you say; no accounting for taste!
Re: Jeepster, I think he may have been more concerned about affecting sales of the first release on his own label, being that his EMI contract would net him far greater income than he was getting with Fly.

Well there's no accounting for taste - and one man's meat and all that! Ha ha.
Of one thing though I am convinced - Marc would have hated it. I remember how he felt about Fly releasing Jeepster after he'd moved on musically - and that was a genuine Bolan great. Although he did rework some earlier work later (Get It On springs to mind), it was very much his own work, and amongst his least successful output.
Marc was fiercely protective of his output - sometimes to his detriment. I just can't believe he would have liked this mangled mess. Sadly of course, we'll never know.

 I really love Childlike Men.
It manages to sound fresh, while having Marc, Mickey, Steve and Bill tangeable in every note. It's obviously done with great care and affection, which I'm sure means it doesn't involve The Bramleys!
As to what Marc would have made of it, who really knows. My personal view is that he would have been overjoyed! He would have surely loved the fact that in the 21st century, someone is interested enough to make this record, and more to the point, that there are enough people who love him, to want to buy it.
If there is anything he would have definitely hated, it would be the Unchained series. The thought of himself being heard in anything other than a finished product would have distressed him greatly.
As for Hey, Let's Do It, it's, at best, an interesting curiosity- almost amusing. At worst, a dreadful studio indulgance which should have remained unreleased. Either way, I hope that, IF this project should go any further, it follows the great example of the lead track.

Having just read that Uncut piece, to say Tony Visconti is full of BS or is getting senile in his old age is putting it mildly. He doesn't just want to revamp and rewrite the Bolan catalogue but the entire history as well.

If they seriously think Morrissey would want to get involved then I think they're in for a disappointment. I'm sure he'd think what Visconti is trying to do is an insult to Marc's memory.

The voice at the end (presumably T. Visconti's) says "come and hear it", which proves that this isn't the full, complete take, as the bit where at least one of the aghast listeners responds "That's awful!" is missing.

Just as cooking isn't simply taking various ingredients, chucking them into a bowl, mashing them together and pronouncing the resuting slop 'food', neither is this either a regeneration of any kind. Sometimes a godawful mess is just that: a godawful mess.

I've just signed for this, the CD single and red vinyl USA version, so it's a relief to know it actually DOES exist but still feel deflated and underwhelmed by it all.

As for Tony Visconti's plans for further besmirching of the Bolan legend (including possibly roping in the odious Morrissey) well....words almost fail me. Let us hope there is a major re-think before anything else of this ilk is unleashed. A 'Love' style 'reimagining' project it most certainly ain't.

Okay, so it's another three items for the T.Rex/Marc Bolan/Fly-Cube collections but that's about the most positive thing that can be said about it all.....

This is what I've just had back from Fly....

All the remaining Intoxica packages are due for mailing on Monday, latest Tuesday.

The 12" is severely delayed and will be sent separately - no extra charge - as soon as it gets here.

So that will be November the 5th at the earliest then!

Good old Debbie at Intoxica told me last night that they're sending out the packages next week but, with the Fly cock-ups, they've obviously got a massive backlog. Not their fault - blame is entirely at feet of Fly/Simon Platz etc.

Despite being one of the foolish diehards who forked out for the entire 'set' of four records when they were first announced, ooh, about six decades back, I agree with TS. These will go into my collection purely because I'm both a Marc Bolan fan and collector and a collector of Fly records. The entire think is indeed a crapulent mess.

Not a problem for those of us who realise this project was beyond Marc's control and who also know the heights he's ascened to in the past but what if any newbies, never having heard Mr B's music before, assume this is how it generally was? Marc indeed deserves way, way better.

Henry - thanks for Music Week release date: so, it 'officially' emerges on Bonfire Night - not bad for a single that was initially scheduled to be released in mid-September! This whole farrago has cost Fly Records an awful lot of goodwill. In contrast, Debbie and the rest of the Intoxica staff are real stars.

I hope that for all those who forked out for this that they do get something for their money. Apart from that it has been a pretty royal cock-up all round. At least the 'Love Me Do' fixed mess up created a whole batch of collectors items in one swoop. The Fly one managed to balls up the big plug on Sounds of the 70s by not having any product for listeners to buy. Mind you, Visconti's bizarre and underwhelming interview didn't help either. Perhaps he knew something we didn't? Any Rhoda - as I said earlier, as a project I think this is dead and buried. And IMHO good job too. Marc deserves so much better than this crapulent mess.

What a surprise (not). Fly are now removing all the many deservedly-critical comments from their Facebook page, regarding the endless stream of empty promises, mythical release dates and "the single is in the post" type propaganda.

Personally, I don't think this or the other 7/12/Cd releases - exist, outwith the Fly offices. An utterly appalling shambles, as I concluded my swiftly-deleted and unresponded-to Fbk message.

I'm very suspicious that since Tuesday/Wednesday last, at least two people on the Fly Facebook page have been claiming to have received both this 7" AND the CD single! Smacvks of 'insiders' or Fly 'plants' to me. How come - if true, which I very much doubt - they've received two items and the rest of us don't even get Fly newsletters, communications etc., let alone any physical product?

Here's the answer I've just received from the lovely Debbie at Intoxica, in response to my query. (I attach no blame to Debbie or Intoxica for the shambles - just Fly):-

Hello Ade,

I am very sorry for the delay in processing your order.
It would appear that there have been delays with the manufacture of the 12" and the shipping of the red vinyl 7" from the US, things that are unfortunately quite out of our hands.

I have just spoken with a representative of Fly Records who tells me that the red vinyl 7" should have shipped today and ought to be here by Tuesday.

The 12" has had an unresolvable problem in the manufacturing process, and will be unavoidably delayed - I can't say when that will be available at all.

All fans who have ordered the 12"(or a package containing one) will be sent the rest of their order as soon as the stock arrives, along with a slip of paper detailing the situation with the 12", offering a refund for those who are not willing to wait.

There will also be a raffle for a very rare original test pressing of a T Rex single; all fans who have pre-ordered any package or format will be automatically entered. I believe details of this will be posted on the Fly Records Facebook group wall.

Once again, I am very sorry for the delay.
As soon as the stock arrives here it will be sent out.

Indeed, in spite of it's awfulness, there are still a whole load of Bolan fans who would snap this up in an instant if only for completeness. I'm sure there may be a minority that will like this whose surname doesn't begin with a V and ends with an I, but true Bolan fans like most of us here see it for what it is... an utter abomination.

I too did wonder if the Bramley's may be involved somewhere along the line with this since the picture sleeve is lousy and they were the masters of crap covers as well as mistreating Marc's music. You can be certain had Pro-Tools existed in the 80's they would had churned out as many mash ups as possible.

Either way, it still doesn't excuse Fly from making a total pigs ear of releasing this and having contempt for it's customers old and new.

Sadly I have to say that I'm not surprised by this. For them to have missed out on sales after that major league plug on JW's show is tantamount to incompetence. It got a drubbing because it is bloody awful - but even allowing for that it could have sold copies had Fly had the wit to market it properly. Like biffbampow I had signed up to earlier Fly newsletters and tinternet stuff only to receive bugger all in return. It is a sad state of affairs indeed- hmmm - the Bramleys aren't in there somewhere are they???
Ade - I hope you do get it all in the end as you've been a patient customer. But I have to be honest myself and say that if this dreadful insulting mess dies without issue then I for one won't mourn it.
I do wish someone at Fly would get a grip!!

Ade Macrow
10th Oct 2012
Completely agree, biffbampow. I did the same as you in '07, similarly signing-up for newsletters, buying singles/CD singles etc. by The Move and Procol Harum. As now, there was a great promise made of treasures to come but, aside from the CD reissues/compilations by The Move and Procol Harum and a John Williams CD compilation....nada.

Maybe they were out by a single letter in their 'T.Rex Regeneration' title and it should have been entitled 'T.Rex Degeneration', to highlight the fact we would-be purchasers will all long be rotting in our graves before anything emerges.

biffbampow
10th Oct 2012
Fly are a joke. When The Move remasters appeared a few years ago, I bought them all and signed up for the newsletters. Their website promised all sorts of re-issues, making it clear they had plenty of unreleased material and what's happened since? Nothing. Never heard back from them, once The Move and Procol Harum stuff was reissued, nothing else has appeared that I know of.

Most galling is that Fly admitted in 2007 they had made a right mess over the years, and exploited their catalogue very badly over the decades so they were now going to right their wrongs. Famous last words...

Ade Macrow
10th Oct 2012
Maybe. If so, they should stop stringing us all along and tell the truth. Getting very hacked-off now. How difficult is it to release a record, at the time you originally stated it'd be released and despatched? Doesn't augur well for the Beverley (Martyn) single and/or any other releases that may - or most likely, not - given this farce, follow...

Perhaps the public airing on Johnnie Walker's show got so many negative remarks that Fly have decided not to bother releasing it?

Getting seriously p*ssed off about all this - beginning to think it's all a myth. I've had no 7", no CD single, no Fly Paper updates through the post - despite signing up innumerable times. Had nothing at all. Neither has anybody else, so it seems. \what a farce. Feels ike this saga's been going on since the birth of Methuselah.

"Duet" albums should be banned as well - anyone remember those Sinatra ones? Urgh! I'm still recovering from the one Ray Davies flung out a year or so ago. That was horrible with him screwing over old Kinks classic with whomever he chose. As for duetting with people beyond the grave... no. Just leave them there in the grave. Please.

I think Bowie has gotten better control of his tapes whereas it seems the Bolan estate are clueless by comparison and think this is a cool idea. Hopefully they and Visconti will quickly learn it isn't.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one here. Totally agree with biffbampow, and you are so right Deltics - the thought of new vocals being . . . err . . . "added" - well, it just beggars belief.  Thanks for the link. Was very dubious about this from what I've read about it here and now having finally heard it, I hope I never get to hear it again. Utterly dreadful and shame on Visconti for creating this piece of rubbish. I didn't particularly like The Beatles' "Love" project but to be fair it did have some imagination and sounded incredible. This just sounds... totally wrong. Bolan's legacy doesn't need this farcical tinkering and I trust true Bolan fans won't be needing it either. I had a lot of time and respect for Tony Visconti - that original work he did with Bolan and Bowie was superb - but remembering his terrible remix in the 80's and listening to this, one thinks he should never be allowed access to Bolan's multitracks again.

Utterly disgusting. Celebrate Marc's anniversary by reveling in the recently unearthed "New York City" clip and listen to the man's original output.

This monstrosity just played and plugged on Johnnie Walker's Sounds of the 70's radio show on BBC Radio 2 - with a rather strained interview with Tony Visconti. TV is a hard man to talk with - I know as I did a TV interview with him back in 1983, and it was like trying to get blood out of a stone; lots of awkward silence and short answers that are very hard to make a conversation out of. JW was the consummate professional of course, but even he had to really work at it.
Reading between the lines and with the questions he asked (for example, about whether or not he - TV - thought that Marc would have approved) you could tell that JW didn't really like it much.

The track was played and I heard it in full for the first time. IMHO it really is the most dreadful mess. At times the re-picking of the lead on RAWS sounds like the needle on the record has got stuck, the lyrics mangle Marc's poetry and the less said about the incongruous phasing at the end of it the better (shades of Megarex). TV compared the work to the Martins' reworks of the Beatles catalogue in LOVE. Not a hope Tony I'm afraid - I thought that was a pretty laudable and at times very moving work. There's no comparison I can see between that and what's been done yet again to Marc's work.

Then the true horror . . . . TV reveals that he now has access to the multi-tracks of Marc's other stuff and that there'll be more to come. Oh the horror!

Judging from the comments that were read out on air I know I'm not the only one who thinks that 'regeneration' is crud. And to those that loved it and thought it was 'the best thing thing to happen in years' I really do wonder why they think that the originals deserve this treatment.

Sad.

Has anyone actually received their copies of this yet I wonder? Just to follow up on my earlier ranty,hissy-fit type message, I did get a very nice mail from Intoxica apologising for the problems I had had in purchasing online. They said if I had difficulties I could call them and order by phone. Sadly I never did manage to order online - ther website just wouldn't let me. I have now decided that I won't be buying it all. I was only ever a lukewarm customer for this one anyway, but it was nice of Intoxica to get back to me so quickly - full marks for that. The delay gave time to think about it though, and when I looked at it all again, for me personally, I think the packaging design is very poor - muddled up typefaces and logos, wrong era pics for the recording, colours to make you weep - and the track itself (what I have heard of it) is bizarre to the point of huh? I think I'll stick to original product only. I'm happy with that. I've never really understood why people think Marc's stuff needs "updating" in anyway. All the original recordings sound as good to me as when I first had them - and that's how I would rather remember Marc.

I really don't know what to make of this track. I'm confused! I think I need to hear this a few times more before I decide. The trouble is that Visconti has done some really horrific reworks previously - with a special raspberry to his ghastly hash of Get It On back in 87 with the dreaded Bramleys sucking the life force out of it all. The jury's still out for me on this. My instinct tells me Marc would have hated it - but what do I know? I have only been a fan for 44 years. I just keep asking myself if TV would ever dare to mess around similarly with any of the Bowie tracks he produced? can you imagine DB's reaction if a remixed version of Heroes came out? Nope - me neither.

Incidentally, the website for the new packages is now up and running, Intoxica, but I have now given up trying to pay for the products. Every time I finish filling out the whole order form and payment details the site crashes telling me that my IP address is "invalid". How utterly typical that poor old Marc suffers from a shite website. It's always second best it seems for Rex products. can you tell I'm fed up? ha ha. Good luck everyone else. I'm giving up with it. Maybe it's a fraudulent site?

But having said that, I appreciate that someone is taking the time and effort to do something like this, and the fact that Tony Visconti is involved is brilliant!
I have always thought of him as the fifth member of T. Rex, and that his contribution to the sound (and arguably the success) is immeasurable. It was never quite the same when he left. Although I'm sure Marc knew what sort of 'sound' he wanted, there was no longer anyone around to add that critical eye and curb his excesses, but also to embellish Marc's work in ways that Marc himself probably hadn't thought of.

I do wish that Fly would update their post on the website though.

The colour on the sleeve would note to me (cant see the dpi on an upload) that the pics are of poor quality, because thats what i would have done to hide the shortcomings of the quality -scanned from contact sheets perhaps - we'll see

Must confess Ts, that I feel the same about this cover, despite the inclusion of some of Tony Visconti's own photos on the reverse. We should be used to it by now...(sigh). Still, at least the revitalised Fly are putting some more stuff out. Like you, I'll be investing in the complete pack/set.

Electric Sevens was indeed a notable exception regarding cover artwork.

From the small illustration in the Record Collector advert, the label appears to be an orange/red colour. Solid centre and with the 'double ring' original logo. Looks pretty decent to me, albeit judged - so far - as a small part of an advertisement.

Ade, I have now read the Fly records blurbs on this one and am relieved that they're going to put together a complete pack so that those that want it all haven't got to fathom it all out (i.e. idiots like me).
I've tried really, really hard to . . err . . . 'like' this cover. I really have. But for me personally it's another let down. There have been so many in the Bolan re-issue stakes here in the UK that I have almost given up hope of ever seeing anything that does the great man justice. The only recent exception to this, IMHO, was the Electric Sevens set. The covers were superb with that.
Still - it's nice to see Bolan product appearing - and I hope that the new Fly labels will do both Bolan and themselves justice?
