"The Spartans" is a marvelous record that I loved as soon as I heard it in March, 1964, and it became the second 45 rpm single that I bought when I started my record collection at that time (the first was "Theme For Young Lovers" by The Shadows). Singles in 1964 cost 6/8d each (33 pence in today's money) and you could buy three singles for £1. "The Spartans" may have been inspired by the music, or at least the subject matter, from the film "The 300 Spartans" which had been on general release during 1963.
