The song " Till There Was You " was originally from the stage musical " The Music Man " , which was made into a successful film in 1962. Pianist Valjean is supported on the track by the lush orchestration of Ernie Freeman , and the performance of this outstanding tune is very impressive. Valjean just managed to creep into the " Hot 100 " with it , at no.100 , in the fall of 1962. Three years earlier , Anita Bryant reached no. 30 with an excellent vocal version. The flip side of Valjean's single is based on a classical composition by Paganini ( arranged by Rachmaninoff ) , and Valjean's stirring version amply demonstrates that he is just as proficient in the classical genre as in pop music. Valjean had a no. 28 U.S. hit with the " Theme From Ben Casey " in the summer of 1962 , and he subsequently toured with various orchestras , including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Tulsa Philharmonic Orchestra. Valjean ( full name Valjean Johns ) was a much-acclaimed pianist / composer / arranger. He died from kidney disease in Oklahoma on 10 February 2003 , aged 68.

Label variations added. As a lover of sixties instrumentals I really like both sides of this record.

Pianist Valjean Johns from Oklahoma (1934 - 2003) made his mark with his version of "Theme from Ben Casey" which reached no. 28 on the Billboard chart in 1962. For some reason DECCA chose not to release that in the U.K. but did put out the two follow-up releases - "Till There Was You" being the first of those.
