The three images provided by rhythmdog all appear to be ARP pressings.

Added three images: a globes copy, a variation with smaller titles, and the most common lines version (not the Monarch press with sans serif print).

To Motownjohnny- I'm pretty sure you have it backwards: First versions of 'Depend On Me' have 54028-A in the dead wax. Second versions have A-54028 in the dead wax. This makes sense, since 'The Feeling Is So Fine' is 54028-B, the same format as the first version of 'You Can Depend On Me'.

I've got numerous variations of Tamla 54028. All of the lined labels, including the Monarch press, have A-54028 in the dead wax if they play the second version of 'Depend On Me'. The later 'Globes' copy I have, also has, in addition to A-54028, H55502. That's not present on any of the lines label variations I have.

All copies of 54028 that play the strings version of 'Way Over There' have a deeply etched bold '55501' in the dead wax. That includes the 'Globes' copy I have.

I have added an oddball copy of the 'Way Over There' with strings, that has the first version of 'Depend On Me' on the flip. I have yet to ever see a copy of 'Way Over There' without strings that has the first version of 'Depend On Me' on the flip.

I have also added the second pressing of 'The Feeling Is So Fine', which has the second version of 'You Can Depend On Me' on the flip. Plays exact same take as most copies of 'Way Over There', and has A-54028 in the dead wax.

Finally, the record notes are incorrect. I have the Monarch pressing that is the default image, and I can confirm that it does NOT say H-54028 in the dead wax, it say A-54028.
delta numbers are 'Way Over There': 35564, 'Depend On Me': 35544'.

Hope this helps sort it all out.

I'm by no means an expert, but I know that at the time of its release Motown's catalogue and tape numbering system was in its infancy and often in a bit of a mess.

As far as I'm aware, if your copy of "Depend On Me" on the flip of "Way Over There", has A-54028 etched in the dead-wax, then it is the original version, as released on the flip of "The Feeling Is So Fine" where 54028 A2 was also printed on the label. I'm pretty certain that only on that initial release, was the song given its full title "You Can Depend On Me".

Over a matter of a few months, several variations of "Way Over There" were recorded, pressed up, released, withdrawn and replaced and it's almost impossible to tell these variations apart, as the differences are often slight.

Here's the entry for "(You Can) Depend on Me". taken from the excellent "Don't Forget The Motor City" website:

My copy of Tamla T-54028 is the "with violins" version of Way Over There, The label has the master number as H-55501. The dead wax has 55501 (no H-).
The flip Depend On Me (no You Can) with master number H-55502 on label. The dead wax has master as A-54028. Definitely an A and not H. Neither side references "second version."

B-side is marked as 'second version'. What differentiates it from the first and where was the first version released?

The master/matrix no. for "Depend On Me" appears to be a typo. error ... H-54028 same number as cat. no. T-54028. It should be H-55502 ??? (compare with Tamla T-54028).

With a nod to PaythePiper, here's a better quality A-side video
