OK, let's see what we can piece together (if anything). Here's the entire Rip catalog of 12 records (the Leonard Harris record clearly doesn't belong to the 1960's Rip). Listed in Cosimo Code order; title is the lower number.

Artist / Title / Catalog / Code
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reginald Hall / The Joke / 154 / 496, 497
Dick Richards / When You Cry Your Heart Out / none / 540, 541
Reggie Hall / Always Picking on Me / 156 / 556, 557
Professor Longhair / I Believe I'm Gonna Leave / 155 / 564, 565
Deacon John / I Can't Wait / 158 / 566, 567
Professor Longhair / Everybody's Blowing / none / 574, 575
Eddie Bo / You're the Only One / 156 / 592, 593
Eddie Bo / Let's Limbo / none / 668, 669
Eddie Bo / Woman / 159 / 681, 682
Reggie Hall / Mama Said / 160 / 689, 690
Alex Spearman / I Can't Cry / 575 / 715, 783
Bobby Mitchell / Walking in Circles / 576 / 1028, 1029

Catalog 156 is used twice and there was no catalog 157. All records appear in the 1962 Code block except Alex Spearman (1963) and Bobby Mitchell (1964). The Spearman record doesn't have the 154 Code prefix. For this short-lived and largely undocumented label, that's pretty much the story.

"The catalog number is probably 154"

Actually, no.

154 is the Cosimo client mastering code for the Rip label. It shows on most [or is it all?] Rip releases. However, it is worth noting that the usual cat. number sequence does indeed start with 154....and is thus likely derived from the mastering code.

The catalog number is probably 154, even if that was assigned somewhere else. Stranger things have happened with Rippo Roberts and his label....

I love it when labels leave the catalog number off. How did they think distributors and stores were going to order (or heaven forbid, return).

There's no catalog number on the label, just the codes assigned by Cosimo Matassa.

Don't know the catalog number on this one; assuming same credits as the other Longhair release on Rip (155). Any help out there?
