Life On Mars was Bowie's third Top 10 single with extra-terrestrial connections, after Space Oddity and Starman.
This single is something of an oddity in the Bowie catalogue. First off, it was an LP track from 1971, but not released as a single until 1973. Also, when it finally did come out, its catalogue number was way out of sequence; it was number RCA 2316, and released two months AFTER Drive-In Saturday, which was RCA 2352. Nevertheless, it did as well as Drive-In Saturday (which was from his then most recent LP, Aladdin Sane).
I also notice the absence of a matrix number like those on earlier RCA singles. Didn't Drive-In Saturday have one of those, CGBS 1248, wasn't it? In that case, why didn't this one have one?
